Zambia In January

January is the height of Zambia’s summer rainy season. Heavy downpours turn roads into impassable mush, and many camps close. However, South Luangwa offers fantastic boat safaris as the river is high enough to explore flooded woodland groves.

This is the prime “Emerald Season” for birdwatching and photography, as the air is dust-free and the colors are vibrant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know to prepare for your journey.

Is it safe to travel to Zambia?

Zambia is one of the safest nations in Africa. Our guests are cared for by elite security and expert guides from the moment they arrive until their departure.

Do I need a visa?+

Many nationalities including US, UK, and EU citizens are now visa-free for tourism. We provide current immigration guidance upon your booking.

What is the “Emerald Season”?+

This refers to the rainy season (November to April). The “Emerald Season” is characterized by lush green landscapes, incredible birdlife, and many mammals giving birth.

What is the best way to get to Zambia?+

Most international travelers fly into Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) in Lusaka or Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport (LVI) in Livingstone. We arrange all internal transfers and bush flights.

What currency is used in Zambia?+

The official currency is the Zambian Kwacha (ZMW). However, US Dollars are widely accepted for visas and at most safari lodges. Credit cards are accepted in major cities and larger lodges.

What should I pack for a Zambian safari?+

Pack neutral-colored clothing (khaki, green, beige), a warm jacket for morning drives, sturdy walking shoes, a wide-brimmed hat, and high-SPF sunscreen. Avoid bright colors and camouflage patterns.

Are walking safaris safe?+

Yes, they are lead by highly trained professional guides and often accompanied by an armed wildlife scout. Safety is the absolute priority, and you will be briefed on “bush etiquette” before heading out.

Do I need any vaccinations?+

Malaria precautions are highly recommended. A Yellow Fever certificate is required if you are traveling from an infected area. We recommend consulting your doctor or a travel clinic at least 6 weeks before travel.

Is there internet access in the safari camps?+

Many luxury lodges offer Wi-Fi in common areas, but remote bush camps are often “off the grid” to provide a true wilderness experience. We recommend checking with your specific lodge if connectivity is a priority.

What kind of food can I expect?+

Expect high-quality international cuisine. Most lodges provide three-course meals, sundowner snacks, and “bush breakfasts.” We can cater to all dietary requirements with advance notice.
